Faculty News, Week of Sept. 18

“Principles of Learning”

This week, Nick De Toustain, Mary Thornton, and Barbara Landrevie participated in a “Principles of Learning” webinar offered by NJAIS. Based on Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath’s book, 10 Things Schools Get Wrong, the webinar looked at brain research and its relevance to common practices in independent schools such as rewards systems, grades, note-taking practices, and other strategies. The group also explored several key principles of human learning and considered how each can be adapted to improve teaching and learning practices. It was presented by Rasha El-Haggan, Assistant Head of School for Academics, Friends School of Baltimore.

Newark Academy & Lacordaire

Mrs. Tashjian and Ms. Brittan Gunusen visited Newark Academy this week to discuss the high school placement process. Lacordaire looks forward to partnering with Newark Academy in the potential placement of 8th grade graduates who are interested in matriculating to a secular independent high school. Newark Academy will be in attendance for Lacordaire’s high school info night.
